Consultation Meeting and Regional Workshop on Shymkent-Tashkent-Khujand Economic Corridor Development

On 12-14 September, ADB held a consultation meeting and regional workshop on STKEC development in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with over 60 participants from transport, trade, customs, tourism agencies and business community in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, and development partners. Participants discussed two prefeasibility studies prepared by ADB delegated consulting firm, and deliberated on the next steps for STKEC development. Participants also visited the Gulistan-Atameken border crossing point (BCP) between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, a free economic zone, and a dried fruit processing company, to understand the functioning and key constraints of the BCP for cargo flow, and the development of manufacturing in Uzbekistan. Participants identified two key areas—modernization of BCPs and regional tourism development—in furthering STKEC development and requested continued ADB support including facilitating the signing of a memorandum of understanding among the three countries to formalize STKEC development. Advisor to the Minister, Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade of Uzbekistan Mr. Abdulla Khashimov, and CWRC Regional Head Lyaziza Sabyrova delivered welcome remarks and highlighted the importance and mutual benefits of the STKEC for all three countries.
