About 20 participants from seven CAREC countries attended a workshop that examined the growth of global supply chains (GSCs) and their implications for policy development and strategies in the Central Asian economies.

The 3-day workshop, held on 12-14 November 2013 in Tokyo, Japan, was attended by officials from policy and regulatory agencies, and private sector representatives from CAREC countries.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB), the ADB Institute, and the CAREC Instituteorganized the workshop, recognizing the importance of the GSC network, which is cited in the CAREC Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy 2020.

The workshop introduced basic concepts of GSC and global production networks (GPNs) and analyzed their roles in formulating development strategies.

The workshop aimed to

  • deepen government officials’ understanding of GSC and GPN,
  • share best regulatory practices among Asian developing countries for integrating domestic industries with global production networks and supply chains, and
  • recommend policies to promote GPN and GSC.

ADB Central and West Asia Department Deputy Director General Hong Wang and ADB Institute Dean and CEO Masahiro Kawai welcomed the participants.
