Support to the Advisory Group on Railway Sector Development

As part of the Afghanistan National Railway Plan, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan wishes to expedite the construction of the Mazar-i-Sharif to Herat railway line (the MHR), which would connect with the existing Mazar-i-Shari to Hairatan railway line, and the Herat to Senghan line being constructed in phases, to form a continuous transit route between Central Asia and the Middle East/South Asia through Afghanistan.

Modernizing Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures to Facilitate Trade

Qaisar–Dari Bum Road Project

The objective of the project is to help the Government of Afghanistan to promote economic and social development and reduce poverty by rehabilitating the primary road network damaged during two decades of conflict and neglect.

Energy Supply Improvement Investment Program, Tranche 2

The project will expand power imports from Turkmenistan through an asynchronous power interconnection, establish a unified power grid in Afghanistan, and extend the power grid into central Afghanistan.

Road Asset Management Project

The Road Asset Management project will finance priority maintenance works for part of Afghanistan's regional highway sections from Kabul to Ghazni and from Kabul to Jalalabad, which are the economic lifeline of the country's eastern region.

The proposed project will assist the Government of Afghanistan in preparing the CAREC Corridors 5 and 6 (Salang Corridor) Project.

Energy Supply Improvement Investment Program, Tranche 1

The subprojects proposed for financing are: (i) 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line from Sheberghan to Dashte Alwan, (ii) 220-kV transmission line from Andkhoy to Sheberghan, (iii) project preparation facility for future energy projects and provision of analytical consulting services, and (iv) program supervision and implementation consultancy.

Additional Financing for Second Customs Reform and Trade Facilitation Project

Transport Network Development Investment Program, Tranche 4

Tranche 4 will reconstruct the remaining 108-kilometer gap from Beharak to Eshkashim in the northeastern corridor, which starts at city of Kunduz and connects to the border-crossing point with Tajikistan at Eshkashim.

Renewable Energy Development

The technical assistance aims to increase the share of renewable energy in Afghanistan by developing a roadmap, developing hybrid wind/solar/diesel renewable energy projects, and increasing the necessary institutional capacity in the country.

Transport Sector Master Plan Update

This technical assistance project will contribute to an increase in trade between Afghanistan and neighboring countries of 100% over the period 2012-2020.

Energy Sector Development Investment Program, Tranche 5

The project will build a 500-kilovolt (kV)/220-kV substation at Dashte Alwan, which will connect to a 500-kV transmission line crossing the Hindukush mountains via the Salang Pass route. This will add 1,000 megawatts to the system and allow power imports from Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

North–South Power Transmission Enhancement Project (formerly Power Distribution Project)

The project will construct a 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line about 225 kilometers (km) long across the Hindukush mountain range between the northern town of Dashte Alwan and Kabul, at the southern end. It will include a new 500-kV / 220-kV substation to connect to the grid in Kabul, Afghanistan's capital.

Energy Development 2014–2023

The project preparatory technical assistance (PPTA) will conduct due diligence for an ensuing ADB project aimed to increase electricity supply and access to electricity and increase gas supply for electricity production and industrial uses.
