Hairatan to Mazar-e-Sharif Railway Development Program
Summary
The project covers
- construction of a 75-kilometer (km) railway line with associated support infrastructure and facilities such as an upgraded marshaling yard and railway station at Hairatan, railway station and transshipment facilities at Mazar-e-Sharif, signaling and telecommunication systems, and safety facilities; and
- institutional development comprising project management, construction supervision, and institutional support.
Expected Outcome
The project will increase economic growth and trade between Afghanistan and the region due to a more efficient, safe, and sustainable railway transport network. Increased transport volumes will also reduce transport costs.
Expected Outputs
- About 75 km of a new railway line and stations between Hairatan and Mazar-e-Sharif constructed and operated
- Railway sector plan endorsed by the Government, railway institution established and capacity building
