Alma Electricity Transmission Project

Summary

The project has three parts: A. Construction of transmission system lines

  • Construction of a 500-kilovolt (kV) overhead transmission line (OHTL) from YuKGRES substation to Alma substation,
  • construction of a 500 kV OHTL from Almaty substation to Alma substation,
  • construction of a 220 kV OHTL from Alma substation to Kensai substation,
  • construction of the incoming cross connection lines of the 220 kV OHTL from Almaty combined heat and power plant (CHP-3) to Robot substation for connection with Alma substation, and
  • construction of incoming cross connection lines of the 220 kV OHTL from Almaty CHP-3 to Shelek substation for connection with Alma substation.
B. Construction, extension, and modernization of substations
  • Construction of 500 kV Alma substation,
  • extension and modernization of 500 kV Almaty substation, and
  • extension and modernization of 500 kV YuKGRES substation.
C. Consulting and technical services
  • Consultant services for procurement and project management for the construction of the 500 kV OHTL from YuKGRES substation to Alma substation; and
  • technical services for the selection and approval of the OHTL route including support for selection of the transmission routes, conduct of engineering surveys, and engineering supervision of contracts during construction.

Expected Outcome

The project will improve the reliability and quality of electricity supply to consumers in the Almaty region in an environmentally responsible and financially sustainable manner. This will be achieved by expanding the capacity of Almaty's transmission network to provide additional capacity and redundancy in the system for uninterrupted supply of electricity.

Expected Outputs

  • Overhead transmission lines in YukGRES, Almaty, Alma, Kensai, and Shelek constructed.
  • Alma substation constructed and Almaty and YukGres substations extended and modernized.
  • Consulting and technical services rendered.
