ADB loan to give Uzbekistan power plant new lease of life

The Asian Development Bank has approved a $300 million loan to upgrade Uzbekistan’s Takhiatash thermal power plant to meet rising electricity demand in the west of the fast-growing Central Asian country.

The soon-to-be-completed road from Dushanbe’s Western Gate to the Uzbekistan border will provide a vital connection between Tajikistan and its neighbors and key piece of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Corridor 3 that spans almost 7,000 kilometers from the Russian Federation in the north to the Persian Gulf in the south.

The CAREC Corridors – Linking the Russian Federation with South Asia and the Middle East

In Central Asia, six CAREC corridors link the region’s economic hubs to each other and connect the landlocked CAREC countries to other Eurasian and global markets. Corridor 3 connects the Russian Federation to South Asia and the Middle East, running through six of CAREC’s member countries.

The CAREC Corridors – Linking the Mediterranean and East Asia

In Central Asia, six CAREC corridors link the region’s economic hubs to each other and connect the landlocked CAREC countries to other Eurasian and global markets. Corridor 2 links East Asia to the Mediterranean and southern Europe - with trade expanding in recent years following the implementation of the People’s Republic of China’s “go west” policy.

In Central Asia, six CAREC corridors link the region’s economic hubs to each other and connect the landlocked CAREC countries to other Eurasian and global markets. Corridor 1 - the most active of the six - links Europe to East Asia, traversing the Russian Federation border to the People’s Republic of China via Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic.
