Regional Workshop on FTA Negotiation Capacity and Regional FTA Lessons in CAREC

The Regional Workshop on FTA Negotiation Capacity and Regional FTA Lessons in CAREC was conducted for the benefit of all CAREC member counties. It is the first event with a purpose of mobilizing high-level support to the process of preparations for negotiations of a potential CAREC FTA and assist to consensus building among the CAREC member countries. DG EARD Ms. Teresa Kho delivered welcome remarks and Zulfia Karimova, Principal Regional Cooperation Specialist, EAPF, EARD, chaired the workshop.

The two main objectives of the workshop were to present and discuss with the CAREC member countries

  • the outcomes of the Capacity Needs Assessment (CNA) conducted under the TA as well as discuss the next steps based on the results of the CNA.
  • the FTA case studies prepared in coordination with the related CAREC counties in order to ensure high-level engagement from all CAREC countries and to have effective regional experience sharing process.

The presentations delivered by the TA Capacity Building team were followed by focused interventions from the country delegates from PRC, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyz Republic highlighting their first-hand practical experiences, best practices and key lessons learned for designing, negotiating, and implementing comprehensive trade agreements.

In total, over 50 senior- and mid-level government officials responsible for trade negotiations from 10 CAREC countries, along with development partners and trade experts, participated at the virtual workshop to share regional knowledge, exchange insights, and mobilize high-level support for preparation and negotiation of a potential CAREC FTA.
