Facilitation of Regional Transit Trade in CAREC: Interim Workshop
The interim workshop for the Asian Development Bank Technical Assistance (TA) 8586 REG: Facilitation of Regional Transit Trade in Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) discussed various TA reports and the implementation of a pilot transit corridor.
The workshop was attended by representatives of customs authorities of CAREC countries, members of the CAREC Federation of Carrier and Forwarder Associations and other private sector organizations (including insurance companies).
The TA has identified priority transit corridors, formulated a comprehensive guarantee mechanism, and examined the legal and regulatory framework. It is also assessing information and communications technology support systems for information sharing.
The proposed pilot scheme gathered considerable interest as it will provide additional flexibility based on a “risk approach” for transit traders and will also offer a multimodal solution. Participants also support the pilot implementation stage in order to produce tangible results.
The project will be taken forward for discussion at the 15th CAREC Customs Cooperation Committee meeting on September 2016.
