The interim workshop for ADB TA-8586 REG: Facilitation of Regional Transit Trade in Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) was held on 26-27 July 2016 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The TA has: (i) identified priority transit corridors, (ii) formulated a comprehensive guarantee mechanism, (iii) examined the legal and regulatory framework, and (iv) is assessing information and communications technology (ICT) support systems and information sharing. The interim workshop was held to consider the various TA reports and the way forward. It was also designed to confirm support for the pilot corridor.
The proposed pilot scheme gathered considerable interest as it will provide more additional flexibility based on a risk approach for transit traders and will also offer a multimodal solution. Participants are supportive of progressing to the pilot implementation stage to see tangible results.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the customs authorities of the CAREC countries, members of the CAREC Federation of Carrier and Forwarder Associations (CFCFA) and other private sector organizations (including insurance companies).
The project will be taken forward for discussion at the CAREC Customs Cooperation Committee meeting in September 2016.
