Summary:The first project of the investment program covers
  • improvement of 145 kilometers (km) of road sections, including 50 km between Bagramy–Sapary road, 51 km between Jabul Saraj–Nijrab, and 44 km between Faizabad–Beharak;
  • operation and maintenance support for the railway line from Hairatan to Mazar-e-Sharif, through additional financing and facilities;
  • delivery of a new governance needs assessment, a revised national road and rail transport plan, assistance to the rail authority, and a detailed feasibility study and design work for the new Mazar-e-Sharif to Andkhoy railway; and
  • nonphysical components such as special assistance to improve planning at the Ministry of Public Works; a new road and rail asset management system; and procurement, financial management, and safeguards plans.
Expected Outcome:The first tranche of the investment program will rehabilitate and expand major sections of Afghanistan's road and railway networks, further improving domestic and regional connectivity while widening access to social and economic opportunities.

  • 145 km of road sections improved;
  • operation and maintenance support for the Hairatan to Mazar-e-Sharif railway line implemented;
  • capacity component assistance delivered; and
  • nonphysical components delivered.
