CAREC Corridor 2 (Mangystau Oblast Sections) Investment Program, Tranche 1

Summary:The first project of the investment program, funded by an $800 million multitranche financing facility from ADB, includes
  • reconstruction of about 200 kilometers (km) of of the Aktau–Manasha Road sections (km 372.6–km 514.3 and km 574–km 632.3), which is part of the 790 km CAREC Corridor 2 in Mangystau Oblast; and
  • strengthening of project management and institutional support by providing construction supervision and program management; feasibility studies of subsequent tranche projects; and capacity development for road construction and maintenance, procurement design, contract management, the enforcement of environmental and resettlement safeguards, and border crossing activities.
The investment program will benefit CAREC Corridor 2, which will connect Kazakhstan with Azerbaijan, Europe, and Turkey through the Caspian Sea to the west; with the Russian Federation to the north; Uzbekistan to the southeast; and Turkmenistan to the south.
Expected Outcome:The investment program will contribute to sustainable economic development and regional cooperation under CAREC. The outcome will be increased transport connectivity and efficiency, and institutional effectiveness.
Expected Outputs:
  • 200 km road sections of the Aktau–Manasha Road reconstructed
    (km 372.6–km 514.3 and km 574–km 632.3); and
  • project management and institutional support strengthened.
